• 'i say howdy to a few people. Since my old stomp!ng grounds-are in [
when you go above S0 on an Oklahoma road. Which brings up
another point--very few people were taking their lives in their
hands Saturday. It might be that Oklahomans are either more
patriotic than Texans, or just naturally slower drivers. Evidently
it is the latter choice, since Oklahomans have been driving SO
since time immemorial, since hitting chugholes at more than 50
really messes up your car.
? Anyway, ! got there more or less when 1 should have, and
started visiting people. One of these people I visited was my high
school English teacher, who got me started in journalism in the
first place. One of her kids asked me if ! was "the journalist.' l •
:ration agreed that, in a manner of speaking, I was. A little bit later,
from the back of the room, the same kid called to his mother.

"Yes?" she asked.
"What's a journalist?"
Fame of sorts is better than nothing. 1.guess.
Another thought I picked up there: President Nixon cannot be
impeached. He's already been impaired.
One thing I did get from the trip was an appreciation of Mr.
Nixon's anti-driving edict. Driving Sunday was a dream. Very
few people were one the road, and most of the time l could look
both ways and see nobody on the road. There was just a bit of a
hassle getting gasoline Sunday morning, but I did manage to get
the tank full of the combustible little stuff, l didn't have the
presence of mind to fill up Saturday night, so I had to get up at an
awful hour Sunday morning to search for an open gas station.
Jiffy stores had closed pumps. Truck stops had closed pumps.
But finally, an independent service station (Wimple's Bait Shop)
hove into view, and that is where I filled up. It even added a little
bit of excitement to things, not knowing if 1 would be able to get
back to Texas.
However, everybody pulled up to the station at the same time I
did. They must have been following me, figuring that if anybody
could find gasoline, a Texan could.
On the way back I did not drive 50 miles an hour, but 1 never
do. Had I not gotten gas Sunday morning 1 would have gone SO,
but I wanted to get back to Clarendon in time to see part of the
Cowboy game, and there is a stretch of road by Memphis I did
not want to drive in the dark because 1 drive worse in the dark
than I do during daylight. And I drive terribly during the daylight
hours.
Speaking of roads, I never fully appreciated Clarendon's roads
until ! got a refresher course in Lawton's streets. Here in
Clarendon, you can find yourself going along at 30 and suddenly
whee! you plummett downhill then uphill then downhill then
uphill, scraping'off various protions of the undercarriage of your
car. The intersection at Sth and Ellerbe is especially dangerous,
because the dips are disguised in such a manner that you'never
see them until it's too late to do anything but go wh.ee!
But in Lawton, you can find yourself going along at 30 and
suddenly clunk! you are in a pit several feet deep. If you get out
of this pit you find your front wheels are running at a 90 degree
angle to each other, instead of parallel like they should be. So an
occasional whee! is just a bit better than a bunch of elunk's.
Drainage is another good thing about Clarendon's streets. In
Lawton after a heavy rain, there are spots where you can go
swimming in the mifldle of the street. Actually swimming.
